This committee leads the chapter’s advocacy for passage of statewide controls on light pollution and its work with communities in adopting dark-sky-friendly municipal lighting bylaws. These efforts include:

  • Encouraging governments and institutions to endorse the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting as an overall guide
  • Training new and existing chapter members in policy advocacy 
  • Building a contact list of members of the Boston Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society who are willing to provide pro bono advice on lighting specifications
  • Submitting and lobbying for statewide legislation 
  • Working to improve lighting sections of state building codes with respect to night sky friendliness of outdoor lighting
  • Supporting a rapid-response advisory team to field inquiries and provide advice on local issues with urgent needs and short deadlines
